Kasper Dolberg, 22, is your 2019-20 Crédit Agricole PCA Player of the Season. A key player at the key moments during the season, the Denmark international received 39% of the votes.
He had such a huge influence in the important times of the campaign, that when it was time to finally vote for the top prize, it was nearly impossible to not click on his name. The highlight was without a doubt the 2-1 derby win over Monaco that took on a whole new dimension when the season was stopped just days later. That night, Kasper Dolberg (almost) single-handedly turned things around – ‘almost’ because he’s one of those strikers that relies on his teammates to provide him with the ammunition. Against our near-neighbours, the other Aiglons provided the bullets and he fired them home, to the delight of Nice and Les Niçois.
That brace, with a header and a chipped finish, will remain part of Gym history, for the joy it procured and for its consequences on the final Ligue 1 standings. It also perfectly symbolises the Iceman’s ability to keep a cool head and a find a clinical finish when the pressure is on and capped off a magnificent first season on the Côte d’Azur.
Having signed from Ajax in August 2019, Dolberg began the year by getting back into top form. He started finding the back of the net immediately, but continued to improve with his physical condition. His intelligent sense of positioning coupled with a sixth sense of where a loose ball will fall saw him nab 11 goals (nine at home) and provide three assists. One of the most-used players on the roster, Kasper got 78.1% of his shots on target in Ligue 1 – the best of any player in Europe’s Top 5 leagues for a player taking at least 20 shots at goal.
